The LW15.22 is not the first rimfire variant of the AR15 and M16 series of rifles, it probably won t be last, but it is the definitive and the one by which all others will be judged. The design brief for the weapon was simple and clear from the start: to build a sub-caliber rifle, identical in operation, weight, feel and handling to the full-caliber version, yet capable of firing the rimfire cartridge with a degree of accuracy worthy of a product bearing the Leitner-Wise name. Simple enough of course, but then think about the fact that the smaller cartridge, with less size and energy must interact with components designed for the much more powerful full-caliber round. Complicate this further by adding yet another level complexity in that the LW15.22 is not just a complete rifle but also an upper receiver that can be fitted to other manufacturer s lower receiver groups. Not only does this introduce an uncertainty of machining tolerances but the whole interrelationship of form, function and design must work across a vast range of spring pressures that do not necessarily conform to the military specifications Leitner-Wise builds to. From a concept weapon that was built in 1988 to the first functioning prototypes shown publicly in 2000, Leitner-Wise continued the quest to complete the circle. A further 3 years of testing and refinement resulted in us signing off on the research and development stage and turning an idea into a production reality. Now the LW15.22 is a highly accurate, purpose built, semi-automatic or select fire rifle and can be a superior training aid when electronic or gas/air powered systems can't provide the levels of realism required. In general use, the LW15.22 enables the user to practice for longer, developing or honing true marksmanship skills with far less expense due primarily to the ammunition. The user can carry out all training regimes and disciplines in an identical manner to the full-caliber weapon because the functions are identical. Like all Leitner-Wise products, the LW15.22 is precision built and engineered on the same machines and by the same technicians as the .499 LWR and the government 5.56 mm versions. The dedicated, blow-back bolt group, magazine and barrel assembly combine to provide an accurate and reliable system. The special coatings, materials and surface finishes Leitner-Wise applies to all the critical components ensures low friction, lubrication retention and a long service life, preventing premature wear from their interaction with one another in the hostile environment they operate in.
