Bush Admits Guantanamo Spoils U.S. Image, Will Close It

Washington D.C. (AHN) - President George W. Bush on Wednesday admitted the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba has damaged the country's reputation and will be closed down.

The President said, "No question, Guantanamo sends, you know, a signal to some of our friends -- provides an excuse, for example, to say, 'The United States is not upholding the values that they're trying encourage other countries to adhere to.'"

He added that, "I'd like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we're holding some people there that are darn dangerous and that we better have a plan to deal with them in our courts." He added that the prisoners would be relocated after the Supreme Court gives its decision on the prosecution of some of the prisoners.

Last month, the U.S. came under criticism from the United Nations' committee against torture. The U.N. body said the United States was holding and torturing terror criminals in foreign secret detention centers.

An Amnesty International report also blamed the Bush administration for detaining several suspects in conditions that do not reflect international human rights principles.

Earlier this week, calls for the closure of Guantanamo reached climax after three detainees died at the center after committing suicide. Two Saudis and a Yemeni used bed sheets to hang themselves on Saturday.
