Default MSBS-5,56 the Polish new assault rifle system

Yesterday, I took part of in a seminar at the Military University of Technology (WAT) in Warsaw, when the first mock-ups of the new Polish assault rifles were shown. They are created under the project called MSBS-5,56 (Modulowy System Broni Strzeleckiej kalibru 5,56 mm - Modular Firearms System 5.56 mm Calibre) consist of classic and bullpup design assault rifles based on a common receiver (sic!) in four types: carbine, assault rifle (406 mm/16 inch barrel), sniper rifle, light machinegun. The first prototypes will be shown in December 2009. In the future it may be a succesor of the Polish Beryl assault rifle.

Default Not bad, my friend, not bad at all.

The MSBS has a few advantages over the Beryl, first of all the fact that it feeds via STANAG 4179 magazines, which will further integrate the Polish Armed Forces in the NATO defense system... or in a future European Defense System, in the more-than-desirable event of an eventual dissolution of such an anachronistic institution as NATO.

BTW, the standard-configuration rifle reminds me somehow of a less-than-known Czech-made firearm called CZW-556, an assault rifle made by CZW - Czech Weapons SRO.

As for the small bull-pup configuration, which at least has an advantage in featuring a left-side ejection window, it somehow reminds me of an ACE Ltd. prototype bull-pup conversion for the AR-15 rifle, seen some years ago at the SHOT Show.

Nice weapon system, but suppose the Beryl should have had a STANAG insert to start off with as the AK series are regarded the best rifles.

Is this new rifle easy to maintain etc?, How accurate/reliable is it?

You can not just put an insert on an AK rifle and make it feed by STANAG rifles. You basically have to re-engineer the entire magazine well and catch, like the Indians did with the KALANTAK-07.
Also, the AK rifle is the best choice if you want low maintenance, dependability, affordability and saturation power, but NOT accuracy, and today accuracy is the key because armed forces are going for shorter and shorter guns, replacing rifles with carbines because of the nature of modern conflicts, made of close-quarters engagements in urban scenarios with a great number of innocents endangered; and every civilian you kill by mistake is two or three more people that add 'selves to the ranks of the enemy you're fighting.
So the full-automatic fire is still an option to be kept on modern assault rifles, since it can be useful for emergency purposes such as to bring down fast multiple enemies in a close engagement where there is no possibility of collateral damages or in case you have to stop a running vehicle, but for combat situation you better have a fast-firing semi-automatic, or a 3-rds burst, very accurate. Under this point of view one might think that there might be a comeback of higher calibers (such as 7'62 NATO) for the standard infantry, but the answer is no, not totally, because higher calibers deliver higher recoil, with negative effects upon accuracy, and heavier overall weight of the weapon, which is not a good thing for a soldier that has to carry his rifle for hours and hours and several miles per day: mobility is seriously damaged. Intermediate calibers are the king for the individual soldier's weapon, and so them will remain.

IMHO, the MSBS-5'56 is a good solution to the problem.

Who knows? The first working prototypes will be available as far as in December 2009, so you have to sit down and wait.
