Unhappy Salutes, Captain!

As I write, solemn State funerals are being held in Rome for Cpt. Alessandro Romani, member of the 185th R.A.O. paratroopers' Target Acquisition Regiment "Folgore" of the Italian Army, killed in Afghanistan last Saturday, 9/17/2010.

Alessandro Romani was assigned, with the rank of Lieutenant, to the "Task Force 45", a joint operational groupment of members of SpecOps units of all the Italian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) tasked to carry on high-risk operations in the Italian contingent's area of jurisdiction, the Herat province. Lt. Romani was killed in a gunfight with insurgent forces after a General Atomics MQ/9 "Reaper" recon drone/UAV of the Italian Air Force spotted two terrorists hiding an improvised explosive device along one of the main roads of the province, and followed them back to their hideout near Bakwah, North-East of Farah.
The "Task Force 45" was dispatched to suppress the insurgent cove with aerial support from Italian Army's Agusta-Westland AW-129/CBT "Mangusta" helicopters. Being one of the first operators to touch ground, Lt. Romani was gunned down by enemy fire as he was terminating his rope descent from the Eurocopter NH-90 transport helicopter, along with a team partner, 1st Lance Corporal Elio Domenico Rapisarda, who was only wounded lightly and whose conditions pose no threat to his life.
The insurgent hideout was subsequently suppressed by the Italian assault.

Born and living in Rome, 36 years old, 15 of which passed in the "Folgore" regiment, Alessandro Romani was considered a veteran in the Italian SpecOps community. He leaves no wife nor children. Lt. Romani was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain for his bravery in action.
