Default Defence news from Israel.

Israel deliberates future of Merkava
While a final decision has yet to be made, the Israeli Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) Merkava Project Administration (Mantak) recently informed the companies manufacturing the Merkava that the IDF intends to reduce by 20 per cent the total number of Merkava Mk 4s procured. The IDF has an order for an undisclosed number of the Merkava Mk 4 MBTs, which will remain in production until 2010

Israel Reflects - New Model Army?
The Israel Defence Force (IDF) is immersed in inquiries and debriefs that are expected to lead to personnel and structural changes and until the lessons are identified, all future plans are frozen.Though perceived by many Israelis as a failure, the 33-day conflict against Hizbullah did further Israel's interests: it damaged Hizbullah's position in Lebanon, ended the latter's exclusive control over the southern part of the country and brought about the deployment of a stronger UN peacekeeping force, together with the Lebanese Army, along Israel's northern border

The Merkava Mk4 order is being reduced because the IDF is interested in a newer design, which will probably be called the Merkava MkV (or possibly given a totally new name). It is a little lighter and faster, not as wide and also taller than previous Merkava's, using a totally new chassis. It is designed from the ground up to provide the maximum possible survival rate in IED/Anti-Tank Mine attacks. It is also designed to be more effective in urban combat.

The Israelis are basically doing the same thing that the US Army is doing... Stopping new weapon programs until they can figure out what needs to be improved. Once that is done, they'll resume design and procurement. Top on the list right now is an anti-rocket system. Tanks that can better survive 5th generation warfare are also near the top of the list, along with improved air-to-ground munitions.
Am Yisrael Chai!
